PETITION OF CITIZENS OF KINNEY COUNTY RELATING TO THE BOUNARIES AND COUNTY SEAT

    Memorial No. 80 [no date]
File Box No. 53, Letter No. K
TO THE HONORABLE THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
We the undersigned Citizens of the County of Bexar, residing within the limits of the contemplated county of Kinney, would most respectfully represent unto your Honorable bodies, That said County of Kinney has never as yet been organized, that when said County was created, there were but few permanent settlers within the limits of said county. We would further represent that “Eagle Pass” the place designated for the County seat of said County is from its proximity to a foreign county, and from the extreme sterility of the soil, wholly unfit for said county seat. We would further represent that we now have a large number of permanent settlers living within the limits of said County of Kinney, all of whom are anxious to have said county organized immediately. We would further represent that now when having any legal business to transact we are compelled to travel to San Antonio, the county seat of Bexar County, a distance at least of One hundred and fifty miles, and that when we are summoned to attend the courts of said county either as suitors, witnesses, or jurors, we are obliged to undergo great hardships, and to make great sacrifices of time and money.
We therefore, in consideration of the matters herein before stated, humbly pray your Honorable bodies to pass an act creating said territory into a county of Kinney and also to include besides said territory all the territory west of said county over which the said County of Bexar now exercises jurisdiction.
We further pray that survey No. 383 Sec. 13 now owned by Saml S. Smith Esq. be designated the county seat of said County.
We further pray that said County be named Kinney County.
We further pray that the County seat be called Brackette [City crossed out].
And as in duty bound we will ever pray etc etc etc.

    [Signed]
